Our mission and purpose is to send at-risk, underserved children touched by gun violence to summer sleep-away camp.
About the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund
The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization created in response to the tragic loss of Scott J. Beigel, the geography teacher and cross-country coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 innocent people died from gun violence. The fund provides camperships to send at-risk, underserved children touched by gun violence to summer sleep-away camp.
Scott J. Beigel was passionate about positively impacting children and lived his life serving kids through his work as a high school geography teacher, cross country coach and summer sleep-away camp counselor. He believed in fighting for the underdog and treating others the way you want to be treated. The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund was created to carry on Scott’s legacy of helping others.
The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund currently works with seven summer sleep-away camps. Through partnerships with SCOPE and The Fresh Air Fund, SJBMF sends children to six of these camps located in the northeast U.S. Through partnership with the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, SJBMF has added a 7th camp partner with focus on sending at-risk children directly from Broward County to summer sleep-away camp in Florida. These camps align perfectly with our mission of supporting at-risk youth through summer sleep-away camp with the vision that through summer camp experiences, a child's life can be changed for the better.
The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund supports children from all walks of life, many coming to us from shelters, broken homes, lost family members, etc. In return for staying in school and on a positive life path, the SJBMF program provides annual camperships to each of our campers every summer through high school graduation. Providing ongoing support, resources and networking opportunities, we work with these gives to give them the tools they need for a safe and prosperous future. In 2022, SJBMF distributed grants to six summer sleep-away camps in three states totaling $283,600 to fund 212 camperships for at-risk and underserved children who have been touched by gun violence.
A campership granted by the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund means a new world of opportunities for a child, not just for one summer, but for a lifetime.
These kids will get the opportunity to attend summer sleep-away camp annually up through graduation of high school where they can learn life skills such as swimming, socializing, sharing and caring. SJBMF will also provide basic resources for children such as socks, underwear and other every day necessities.
SJBMF hosts several annual events to raise funds for the $1,500 per child needed for summer sleep-away camperships. These events are our primary source of funding and are combined with generous donations made throughout the year to send as many at-risk and underserved children to camp as possible every summer.
Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund currently works with 7 summer sleep-away camps through SCOPE and The Fresh Air Fund. These organizations share common beliefs of the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, that every child should have access to summer camp and through summer camp experiences, a child’s life can be changed.
